New Age Relationships – “Catfishing”

Are traditional relationships gone with the wind?  The average single has probably tried every conventional method of dating and still has not found that special someone.  In this day and age of modern technology it’s sad, and frankly makes no sense.

So then what is a single to do?  Well if you have seen the documentary or the television show “Catfish” you would think that one should create one online.  Online relationships have been going on all over the world for many years and thanks to Nev Shulman who introduced “catfishing” to the world and Manti Te’o the Notre Dame linebacker, a victim of an online girlfriend hoax, this virtual dating trend has finally come to light.

What is “catfishing”?  A person, who creates a fake online profile in order to pursue romantic relationships online.  While these  type of relationships seem to be the trend du jour, for many singles this is a very viable form of dating.  Why people do it can vary from person to person; low self-esteem or a person could be lonely and just seeking companionship.

Maybe you don’t think this could ever happen to you, or that you would be interested in having a virtual romantic relationship.  One thing is very clear about those that are currently in one or those who have had online relationships, like any other relationship there are benefits and drawbacks.  Personally, I am not for or against, I just believe that regardless of how you meet someone, do a background check before you start telling a perfect stranger you love them!
